Building Comfort [out of cardboard]

10/09/2025 to 14/09/2025
MOTIVATION

A kid gathers random chunks of wood, ties them to a tree and watches the world below from the house he just built. He doesn’t stop to question his carpentry skills or whether or not his creation will outlast him. The planks, balanced between the branches of his backyard tree on which he sits, is a treehouse like no other. Tomorrow he’ll build something else. Perhaps a castle out of cardboard or a cave of couch cushions.

This free approach to creation, executed with one’s own two hands in a world increasingly full of artificially fabricated products and ideas is what inspires ‘Building Comfort [out of cardboard]’. As a collective, we aim to encourage play and spontaneous creativity; doing for the sake of doing, unrestrained and uninhibited.

WHO ARE WE

Fionn and Freja met in November 2024. Since then they haven’t stopped creating as a team, acknowledging their shared relentlessness to be seen and move fast and big. In just a few months of knowing each other they’ve executed multiple exhibitions and projects in various constellations all over Berlin. They are currently creating an installation which will open in June ‘25 at Gierke 6 Gallery among other creative endeavors such as music and theater. ‘Building Comfort [out of cardboard]’ will be an encapsulation of our connection to our inner child who simply wants to play and build, a connection we hold on to in all of our artistic projects and processes.

VENUE

The art installation ‘Building Comfort [Out of Cardboard]’ will take place in Gierke 6 Contemporary, a newly founded art Gallery in Charlottenburg, a space with multiple rooms and a puzzling architecture. ‘Building Comfort [Out of Cardboard]’ will be Gierke’s first of many collaborations with young, emerging artists.

Gierkepl. 6, 10585 Berlin

We are capable of free thought, unbound by a code that executes to form our existence.
Building Comfort [Out of Cardboard]
CONCEPT

In the backroom of Gallery Gierke 6 in Charlottenburg, Fionn and Freja will build their home. Buying little to no materials, utilizing only things they can gather from the streets or other unlikely places they will build an immersive installation for its audience to explore and interact with. All tools and materials will be reclaimed objects that we repurpose to build our home. This process will be documented and carried out as the two artists commit to treating this room like a home, spending their days and nights, and building everything they’d need from scratch.

Each item is functional in its purpose. What if we built a comfortable lounge chair and a radio which plays music out of cardboard? Why not! The exhibition consists in this way of very mixed materials and mechanics, exploring the question: what if a kid had to build their home from scratch?

The piece is considered an ode to all the couch cushion forts and homemade tree houses that were made by the hands of kids who had yet to believe that they couldn’t. It is an immersive experience encouraging the audience to look, listen and touch and most of all: play!

The installation is considered an ode to a childlike state of mind: embracing the oblivion to create freely without questioning whether it’s possible or limitations. It goes against the tendency to find excuses or reasons to not do something, and instead jumping in head first.
